The NEW New Year’s Resolution

on December 31, 2012

Happy New Year!  As much as I love the holidays, I always look forward to January 1st and it’s offering of a fresh start for the coming year.  I understand many people no longer make New Year’s Resolutions, scoffing that they “don’t work”.  I, however, believe that a Resolution can help keep you focused on what it is you really want to accomplish in the coming year.  The definition of resolution is a firm decision to do or not do something; thus a New Years Resolution can act as your mission statement for 2013.   I recommend in order for your NYR to withstand the challenges of daily life, it needs to have a way and and a why.  What is the way?  The way describes how you are going to achieve your NYR.  For example, if your NYR is to lose weight, then you could say, “This year, I am going to reach my healthy weight.  I will do this by working out at least 2 times a week, using a food log, and getting to bed by 10:00pm most nights.”  The why is the magic that gives your NYR meaning and will power your motivation.  Your why is special to you…it could be to have more energy, to be healthy for your family, to look great naked ; ).  Here’s how to test if your NYR will work for you:  Say it out loud followed by your way and your why.  When you say your way, you should feel in your heart that these are things you can really do.  When say your why, you should feel in your heart that this is what you truly yearn for in your life.  *Once it sounds true, say it everyday starting January 1st, and I promise it will help you achieve your goals for 2013.
